The World Heritage Centre launched the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) 2023 call for applications to mark
the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, titled: Working on the Future.
UNESCO puts out this call every year to enable the winning countries to receive volunteers from all over
the world and to promote their world heritage sites. This was Hungarys inaugural successful competition entry.
The program was coordinated by the State Secretariat for Architecture of the Ministry of Construction
and Transport and was implemented in cooperation with several partner universities, organisations and agencies.
Participants from 16 countries, representing 4 continents, got to know Budapest’s world heritage sites during
the program and concluded with the design of creative, visitor-friendly spaces, which were presented
to the partners on the closing day of the event.
The purpose of the ten-day program series was to involve international participants in the preservation of world heritage, draw their attention to the beauty of Budapest’ architectural gems and culture, and providing them
with a platform for an interactive discourse about universal challenges of heritage preservation.
